– The Challenge
IAM RoadSmart is a UK road-safety charity focused on improving driving and riding standards through education, training and behavioural change.
Its communications need to reach a broad public audience across different levels of experience, confidence and awareness. The organisation must provide authoritative guidance without sounding overly instructional, judgemental or overwhelming.
Unlike a conventional commercial campaign, the aim is rarely to prompt one immediate purchase or action. IAM RoadSmart needs to encourage people to reconsider familiar behaviours and make safer decisions over time.
The challenge was to establish a clearer and more consistent approach that could support year-round campaigns while balancing education, authority and encouragement.
– Our Approach
Fresh01 worked closely with IAM RoadSmart stakeholders to develop strategic brand and campaign frameworks centred on clarity, accessibility and trust.
The work considered how tone of voice, messaging structure and visual presentation could make important road-safety guidance easier to understand and more relevant to everyday drivers and riders.
Rather than communicating through warnings alone, the approach was designed to feel supportive. Information was organised to help audiences recognise risks, consider their own behaviour and move towards safer choices without feeling lectured.
Fresh01 developed brand positioning, tone-of-voice principles and a structured visual framework that could be applied across public-facing campaigns, digital platforms and learning materials.
The work also included campaign concepts, storyboarding and hero video content, providing IAM RoadSmart with stronger central ideas that could be adapted across different channels and subjects while remaining part of a consistent wider identity.
– The Outcome
The work helped IAM RoadSmart present a more unified and confident organisation across its public communications.
The clearer tone and visual structure made complex guidance easier to navigate while strengthening the authority and trust associated with the charity.
The framework also provided a more consistent foundation for year-round activity, helping individual campaigns feel connected rather than appearing as isolated messages.
By combining education with encouragement, the communications supported IAM RoadSmart’s longer-term aim of influencing behaviour thoughtfully rather than relying on short-lived reactions.
